Anal Cancer Examination Study (ACES) is a study looking at whether a yearly examination will diagnose anal cancer earlier when it is easier to treat. At an early stage the treatment may involve as little as removal of the cancer in the same way that a mole or lump on the skin is removed. When tumors are larger when they are diagnosed they may require treatment with chemotherapy or radiotherapy.
This project involves a number of things over a 5 year period including
- an annual anal examination
- a short questionnaire after each anal examination
- an anal swab at baseline and 5 years later to check for HPV (the virus associated with anal cancer)
