This study will explore the experiences of overseas-born trans and gender diverse (TGD) community with HIV and other STI prevention strategies in Australia. The aim is to ensure that future strategies are gender affirming, culturally relevant, and inclusive of this specific community.
About the study
Overseas-born trans and gender diverse (TGD) community members often faced barriers in accessing HIV and other STI prevention strategies, including testing and treatment. Some of these include:
- Limited number of resources that are gender affirming and culturally relevant to their lived and living experiences,
- Medicare ineligibility and costs associated with sexual health care, including doctor’s appointment, pathology and serology,
- Perceived and real experiences with transphobia and racism from health care providers,
- Competing priorities between gender affirming care and sexual health prevention, and
- Concerns over long-term side effects of combining gender affirming hormone therapy with biomedical prevention strategies such as PEP, PrEP, and Doxy PEP.
The purpose of the study is to explore overseas-born TGD community’s experiences with HIV and other STI prevention strategies, identify gaps, and explore possibilities for improvement. The findings can be used to ensure that future prevention strategies address their needs, gender affirming, and are culturally relevant to this specific population.
