This study looked at whether these bacteria were associated with increasing sexual activity. This study used molecular assay to examine vaginal samples for newly described BV associated bacteria.

We found that the majority of BV associated bacteria were absent or rare in sexually-unexposed women. BV associated bacteria were found more frequently with increasing sexual exposure. This suggests potential sexual transmission of BV associated bacteria.
