What is it?

Folliculitis occurs when the hair follicles become irritated or infected.

They may appear to be 2-5 mm red, painful or itchy bumps or pustules around hair follicles.

Folliculitis can be caused by:

  • bacterial, viral or fungal organisms
  • irritating substances
  • damage to the hair follicle by shaving, scratching or obstruction of the pore
